As described in the FRANCHISE TAGS section in the rules, each franchise will have four opportunities to protect a free agent that has an expired contract. Besides the two franchise tags, each franchise will also get two ACEs (annual contract extension) to use at the end of the season to extend a contract by one year at a cost of 15 Beer Tokens per ACE. Players that are ACE'd do not enter the Auction!
Example: TEAM X had Adrian Peterson on a one year contract prior to the 2015 season. TEAM X has already used his Super Franchise tag the previous season. TEAM X uses one of his ACEs on Peterson and extends his contract through the 2016 season.
ACEs can also be used to extend a trade by one year if the GM decides to do so. If you conduct a trade, you can use your ACE to add a year to a player traded for regardless of his contract. Example: Team X traded for RB Jamaal Charles. Charles has a 3 year contract. Team X used one of his ACEs to add one year to Charles' contract and now Charles has a 4 year contract.
ACEs are the exclusive privilege to each franchise and cannot be traded.
ACEs can be used on the same player after each season, but the fee is DOUBLED per year. Therefore the first year is 15, the second is 30, the third is 60, the fourth is 120 and so on and so forth.
A GM does not have to use either of his/her ACEs but they do not carry over to the next season.
At the end of the season, there will be a deadline prior to the auction on when to pronounce the ACE designations.
Scenerio: If Team X uses an ACE of Peterson for 2 years, the third year becomes expensive if Team X were to use the ACE again (60 Beer Tokens). If Team X were to trade Peterson at the end of that prior season, then the new team Peterson goes to would still be required to pay 60 Beer Tokens. Reason is because Peterson would be ACE'd three years in a row.
